If you are a new player and are wondering about one of the most popular games then you are at the right place. In this post we are going to cover one of the hugely popular games in the world today and that is The League of Legends.
LoL is easily one of the most popular games in the world today but what does the numbers say. It just gives an idea that it is bigger than what we thought about it. It is the most played Esport in the entire world! The count of players has seen a rise and fall and yet again rise in this game but it is still huge. The details are in the following..
Riot games had developed the game way back in 2009 and since then there has been no looking back. It started with a few thousand players and by 2011 it had gained a traction of about 11 million players. You wouldn’t believe that by 2014 the number of players touched 65 million. The story doesn’t end there and by 2017 the number grew by even more and reached 100 million players! The gold run came to decline after that and the numbers reduced to 75 million in 2018, i.e., a year later to achieving the feat of 100 million. However, not to worry, the count has reached 100-120 million in the year 2020.
Speaking of 2011
In 2021 there has been an announcement by Riot Games and in the official statement the creators have announced the number of players they have. The numbers were disclosed in the form of a graph which is pretty nice.
The figures are like:
- Total of 32.5 Million registrations
- 11.5 Million monthly players
- 4.2 Million daily players
- 1.3 Million players playing at the same time.
Naturally the upkeep of the games is quite a job and Riot Games have also grown in the process. The creators have also grown about five times to a count of 300 in total number of employees.
There are details of other factors such as the number of minions killed, how many champions died , how much of Gold was earned and many other things.
In the next year 2012
In the year 2012, i.e., in the next year another statement was released about the player count providing details like:
- Total of 70 Million registrations
- 32 Million monthly players
- 12 Million daily players
- 3 Million concurrent players.
If we see carefully, we can make out that the game has been played for more than 1 Billion play hours every month. That is a mind boggling number!
The Player count in 2014
In the next two years the player count was off to 65 million. That is what was released in the statement in the year 2014 by Riot games.
What we could make out of the statement is in the following:
- 65 Million monthly players
- 27 Million daily players
- 8 Million peak concurrent players
The joy run of growth has continued which one can easily find out from the information above. In fact, it has nearly doubled in monthly and daily players’ count.
In the Year 2017
Although in the year 2017 Riot Games didn’t make any official statement but from analysis of some of the graphs of the League of Legends, we could make out the figure is quite close if not more than a 100 million.
Not even some countries have that kind of numbers in their population!
In the Year 2018
The gold rush saw a downfall in this year of 2018. But if you see in the next segment you will see it came back with a bang in the year 2020 after quite a good amount of marketing and some good number of launching of events.
Latest report: League of Legends Player Count 2020
It is nothing short of King of Games in terms of number of players in the year 2020. League of Legends has jaw droppingly reached a base of 115 million players monthly. It doesn’t come easy. They have made a continuous effort of releasing new Events, Tournaments, and Champions. And they are continuously doing so.
So, how big is League of Legends?
$75 million in prize pool money in all the Tournaments held all over the world! The break up of that figure is in the following:
- 5,580,255.87 as Prize Money for Online Tournaments up till now
- $69,363,810.93 as Offline/LAN Tournaments up till now
A whopping $75 million is not a matter of joke as an investment in Esports! That is how big is LoL.
A Comparison with other games
Let see a comparison of League of Legends with other games:
League of Legends vs Dota 2
|League of Legends has about 115 Million monthly players count and a peak of 50 Million players on daily basis||Dota 2 has an 11 Million Monthly player count and a 1 Million Daily player count|
League of Legends Vs Minecraft Vs CS:GO
|Minecraft is one of the most popular game and is also one of the most famous of all. However, it has only 10 million players more than LoL.||It is short in player count by only a 10 million margin. That makes it one of the top games played in the world.||CSGO is one of the biggest FPS games in the world, but still it has only 26 Million monthly players. Whereas, League of Legends almost has 100 Million more than that!|
If you are looking for a game of substantial size and popularity then this is the game for you. It has the punch and variety to keep you engaged around the year. So, League of Legends is quite a nice choice if you would like to give it a shot.
